Pour Over 101

Updated: Apr 8, 2021

Pour overs are by far one of my favorite brewing methods. It can seem intimidating if you’ve never made one before, but once you’ve tried it, I promise you’ll be hooked! Brewing a cup of coffee using this method takes about 5 minutes and produces a super fresh, tasty cup of coffee. If you’re a budding coffee enthusiast, or a coffee veteran who hasn’t ventured into the pour over world yet, now’s the time to try!

What you need: – hario v60 brewer and filter (we love our reusable ones!) OR chemex brewer and filter – gooseneck kettle – grinder – 24g of coffee – hot water, about 205° – scale – timer – mug

Instructions: 1. Put the filter in the brewer and rinse with hot water, discard the water 2. Grind coffee, about as fine as kosher salt, and add it to the filter 3. Let it bloom! Saturate the coffee with just enough water to cover the grounds and let it bloom for 15 seconds 4. Pour water in a spiral pattern (try to avoid hitting the filter directly), adding water every 10-15 seconds until you reach 360g 5. Remove brewer from your mug once you hit 3 minutes 6. Enjoy your cup of happiness!

You may be wondering why this is my preferred method of brewing a single cup of coffee. I tend to bounce between pour overs, using a french press, and using my espresso machine, but the flavor of the pour over coffee never disappoints. This method really brings out all the flavor profiles of the coffee, super important for black coffee drinkers!

So give it a try! Leave a comment and let us know what you think or if you have any questions. We’d love to chat with you about your experience!
